Media magnateย Oprah Winfrey. Talk show hostย Jimmy Kimmel. Singer-songwritersย Billie Eilishย andย Taylor Swift.
Theyโre among the celebrities whoย misleading social media posts claimedย left or said theyโd leave the United States following President Donald Trumpโs 2024 election.
But those claims are false, and so is a new one in the same vein.
โBREAKING NEWS,โ a Jan. 21 Facebookย postย said. โWhoopi Goldberg, Megan Rapinoe and Taylor Swift decide to leave the United States.โ
This post was flagged as part of Metaโs efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed. (Read more about ourย partnership with Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram and Threads.)
The post included aย linkย to a site titled โTruth here!โ with a Jan. 21 post bearing a headline with the same claim as the Facebook post.
The blog post didnโt mention Trump, but claimed โtheir decisions to leave America come amidst a backdrop of mounting social, political and economic tensions.โ
We previouslyย fact-checked and found Falseย a claim that Swift said she was leaving the country if Trump became president, and that sheย moved to Canada after his victory.
We looked anew for credible evidence, such as public statements or news reports, that sheโs leaving the country and found none.
We also found no such evidence to corroborate the claims about Goldberg or Rapinoe.
On Nov. 10, a Facebook account that posts fabricated storiesย wroteย that Rapinoe was leaving the United States โafter massive red waveโ because she said she couldnโt โlive here anymore,โ but the post was clearly labeled โsatire.โ
A similar claim, that Rapinoe and Goldberg were going to leave America because they โget no respect here,โ alsoย originatedย on a self-described satire site.
We rate claims Goldberg, Rapinoe and Swift said theyโre leaving the United States False.
